Inspiration
With a variety of experience in fitness amongst our team members, we've noticed a number of problems for college students entering or already within the fitness realm including not having a consistent app to track gym progress, nutrition, and work schedule, as well as not having anyone to go with or share personal progress with. Before deciding on the idea, we collected many different user stories from our peers who related to the issues we listed and finally decided on our project idea.
What it does
Our application provides a workout plan, provides nutritional assistance, helps match users with gym buddies, provides community posts about events or funny moments, and keeps track of your progress.
How we built it
We used Wix for our frontend, and coded a lot of the functionality using Velo which is a tool that allows you to code into Wix using JavaScript
Challenges we ran into
Wix ended up being a lot less intuitive than we expected, and so we would have sections randomly disappear or boxes resize many times causing the page to look very sloppy at times.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The fitness calculators are probably the feature that we're most excited about, as we have never seen these on the other big fitness apps like MyFitnessPal or Strava, and we feel confident our users will enjoy them just as much.
What we learned
It gave us a chance to refresh on JavaScript, and also tried to implement some user experience design by getting user stories and getting feedback throughout the development process and we saw how big of a difference this made.
What's next for GatorFit
We definitely want to add more exercises to our selection, along with making some improvements to the community feature to make it easier for users to interact with each other. We also would like to further expand on our personal stat tracking capabilities along with expanding our platform into a mobile application as we feel this would offer more functionality to better serve our users' needs.
