I really like virtual pets. Tamagotchi was the main inspiration Shumitos, I don't think there are many good mobile alternatives for it, so I decided to give it a shot myself.
In this game, your virtual pet (known as Shumito) will get bored and hungry as time passes. You need to satisfy both of these needs by buying food to feed your Shumito, and playing the mini-game with it. You can name, level up, and customize with hats your Shumito. You can also change the room in which your Shumito lives in, and add two furniture items for further customization. The mini-game consists of a difficult wave-based space shooter where you control your Shumito's spaceship and have to defeat enemy spaceships. Score as high as possible and you will be rewarded with Shumi-Coins to spend at the Shop. Your Shumito will start as a baby, you can choose its gender, and as the Shumito levels up, it will evolve into a Phase 2 Shumito, and then into a Phase 3 Shumito. There are currently 7 different Phase 3 evolutions that can be achieved by the gender and care levels at the moment of the evolution. You can check other users' Shumitos by going to the "Social" tab in the menu. There you can visit them and send likes if you liked that creator. You can also post your Shumito for others to see.
We built this using Unity as it's the engine we are the most familiar with. It's also a good choice if we want to start developing for platforms other than web.
Trying to build a good scalable architecture from the beginning was a challenge, but having to create the game in 3.5 weeks was the biggest challenge. It's also what we are most proud of.
We learned a good chunk about devvit and how to publish apps to a subreddit (duh!), but we also learned about developing scalable games and how to set up everything so we can easily add more content in the future.
Improve the UI, add sound effects, a couple more mini-games, more Shumitos, more hats, and another customization option for Shumitos.
There's currently an issue with the game not being able to launch in Reddit's Android app. In order to play on Android, I recommend opening the game in web browser like Firefox and disabling "scroll to hide toolbar".
