Inspiration
Especially during the age of virtual learning, GroupMe and other tools are good for general communication to stay in the loop; however, we all need 1-on-1 or small group interactions to keep up with the class, get help, and make new connections.
What it does
Gather helps you find people in your classes and lets you decide whether you want to study with them based on the classes they take, majors, and interests! If you both want to study together, we open up a chat and give you the option to expand it as you make more mutual matches.
How I built it
We built it using the Flutter mobile framework and made mock-ups with Adobe XD
Challenges I ran into
We initially planned on using a Firebase backend for authentication and adding a database, but we ended up not having enough time to add them to the app. It also doesn't have full functionality due to time constraints.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The app looks really nice and has smooth animations between and on individual screens. This was definitely not a simple app to design so I am glad it turned out looking so good.
What I learned
I learned how working with a team is very different than just working on solo projects and that they require a lot more coordination. We also all learned that learning new things so quickly isn't always easy. I was the only one who knew how to use Flutter or almost any sort of front-end, so I had to try and help them learn Flutter within the small amount of time we had.
What's next for Gather
We want to try and finish the app by adding the full functionality and put in a proper backend. I feel like this would be a great app for people to have even after the pandemic. Meeting people isn't always easy, but it can really help you out in your classes. So we are all definitely interested in seeing what this app could become to students on campus.
