Inspiration
As active members of Girls Who Code, we have personally seen the effects of cyberattacks such as phishing, viruses, and social media threats. The effects can be detrimental, and we wish to protect children from possible future attacks by educating them on ways to protect themselves in a fun and interactive way.
What it does
GATEWAY is an engaging game that allows children to learn about cybersecurity. The player works as an airport officer who scans every character's belongings. A character may have incorrect and non-corresponding information and even dangerous objects! It's the player's responsibility to double-check everything and make sure they're given accurate information and not let a hacker into the rocket ship! It teaches players to check everything before trusting blindly and to look closely (everyday cybersecurity).
How we built it
Utilizing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, we were able to bring GATEWAY to life! HTML was used to create the base and skeleton of the web page. Utilizing CSS, we were able to bring color into the web page, making it look like an actual game. Lastly, JavaScript was used to create the game logic, the real bread and butter!
Challenges we ran into
Throughout the coding process, there were a lot of visual issues such as oddly scaled boxes, cut-off information, and glitching tools. However, we were able to overcome these problems through trial and error.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A very specific aspect of the game we're really proud of is the animation of the stamp. The animation and sound effect are really cute. Another thing we're really proud of is the character designs, which were all individually designed. We're also proud of the game logic we were able to code and figure out.
What we learned
We learned the extent of JavaScript and more complex syntax with the help of AI. It's intriguing to see the length and power of the language. One specific thing we learned is that ".querySelector" is a shortcut that finds HTML elements to use JavaScript with CSS.
What's next for GATEWAY
Because cybersecurity is a topic we're passionate about, we plan to create a part two of this game, where the characters land on this foreign planet. We also want to promote it to be more public so everyone can better protect themselves in this technologically advancing world.
