Inspiration

GatePlay started with a real moment at Gatwick Airport. My flight was delayed for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Everyone around me was bored, frustrated, endlessly scrolling.

I realised airport delays aren’t just inconvenience — they’re untapped opportunity. That waiting time could be engaging, productive, even profitable.

That idea became GatePlay.

What it does

GatePlay transforms airport waiting time into an interactive experience.

Passengers scan a QR code, enter their flight details, destination, and purpose of visit. Based on their available time, the system generates personalised AI-powered quizzes tailored to where they’re travelling.

High scores unlock discounts at nearby cafés and restaurants.

It also includes Roam Around, a 2D/3D airport exploration game where passengers can join challenges, discover shops, and unlock sponsored rewards.

Everything is synced with a live flight countdown timer to ensure no one misses boarding.

How we built it

We built GatePlay as a web-based platform for easy access and scalability.

The backend securely integrates Gemini API to generate dynamic, destination-based content.

We implemented: • Flight-time-based quiz scaling • Score-based reward logic • Distance-based restaurant matching • Real-time countdown alerts

The system connects passengers, airport retailers, and flight timing into one ecosystem.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was syncing real-time flight timing with engagement without overwhelming users.

Another challenge was balancing personalisation with simplicity — making it smart but easy to use.

Designing meaningful reward logic that benefits both passengers and airport retailers also required careful planning.

What we learned

We learned that waiting time is an untapped economy.

Gamification increases engagement. Personalisation increases retention. AI becomes powerful when connected to real-time context.

Airports are not just transit spaces — they are interactive ecosystems waiting to evolve.

What’s next for GatePlay

Next, we aim to: • Integrate live airport data systems • Build a retailer analytics dashboard • Pilot the platform in a real airport environment • Expand globally
