Inspiration
It's no secret that gas prices have spiked significantly in recent weeks but gas should not be an additional concern especially for student commuters. That's why you need Gassy.
What it does
Gassy displays the cheapest gas price based on location input. The user can make their own submission and add/ update gas station prices. These prices get automatically sorted into the system.
How we built it
After creating a wireframe with Figma, we built a search bar to filter gas stations by location. Then we sorted the gas prices from cheapest to most expensive.
Challenges we ran into
One of our major roadblocks was realizing that the API that we requested data from was inaccessible due to the essential features being restricted to an enterprise subscription.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
To get over that major roadblock, we had to resort to manually inputted data which inspired us to create a system where the user can manually input and update current prices.
What we learned
We became more familiar with the app building process and learned how significant of a role planning is with a complex project. Developers must be flexible enough to expect a change of plans.
In terms of technical skills, we learned ReactJS while practicing concepts such as state management and styling by implementing the front-end.
What's next for Gassy
We plan to implement the API that allows us to retrieve gas station prices by city, a map that pinpoints the locations of each gas station, and include the different amenities and services each gas station provides.
