Inspiration

Our inspiration struck from the painful irony of Web3: billions in crypto sloshing around blockchains, yet sending tokens feels like filing taxes; clunky, fee-riddled, and soul-crushing. We wanted to flip that script, making on-chain transfers as instinctive as dropping a sticker in a group chat. Drawing from the viral energy of apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, mixed with degen vibes from Discord's crypto servers and the gossip-fueled chaos of Twitter (now X), Gasless Gossip was born. In a world where social and financial rails are siloed, we dreamed of a playground where every "@username $5" sparks joy, progression, and real economic magic.

What it does

Gasless Gossip is a mobile-first, gamified messaging app on Starknet that turns chats into frictionless token economies. At its core, it leverages account abstraction (via ERC-4337) to onboard users with a simple email signup, no seeds, no wallets then lets them send ERC-20 tokens instantly by just @-mentioning a username in any conversation, like "@degen $0.01" for a quick tip. It's gasless, powered by bundlers and paymasters, so no one pays fees.

Beyond transfers, it's a Web3 social hub:

  • Earn XP and level up through messaging, reactions, secrets shared, and especially token sends/receives—unlocking badges like "Lord of the Leaks" and rare stickers.
  • Secret Rooms** for anonymous, timed gossip with auto-deleting messages, voice notes, and in-room @-tips.
  • Degen Mode for betting tokens on gossip truths or hosting "Pump Rooms" with leaderboards.
  • Creator Tools like tip jars, NFT-gated rooms, and analytics on sends/gifts.

How we built it

We kicked off with a lean MVP stack, prioritizing the @-mention transfer magic:

  • Frontend: Flutter Native for cross-platform mobile (iOS/Android), with Expo for rapid iteration. We used Gifted Chat for the messaging UI, sprinkling in Lottie for token-flight animations (confetti coins on send!).
  • Blockchain Layer: Starknet Sepolia testnet for dev. Account abstraction via Pimlico bundlers and Stackup paymasters handled gasless sends—users get a smart account on signup via Biconomy's SDK.
  • Backend/Off-Chain: The Graph for indexing on-chain events (chats as metadata, transfers as txs),

Challenges we ran into

Account abstraction was our siren song—and nightmare. ERC-4337's userOps are powerful but finicky; bundler quotas tripped us during stress tests, causing "stuck" sends that felt anything but gasless. Parsing @-mentions in real-time chat inputs led to regex hell, especially with emojis or typos (e.g., "@user$5" vs. "@user $5").

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Nailing the "sticker send" feel: In demos, jaws dropped when a casual "@buddy 0.01" zipped tokens across the table with zero friction—real on-chain, zero gas. We shipped a working prototype with 5+ features intertwined: transfers powering XP, which unlocks room perks. Proudest? The level-up animation syncing with a live transfer—pure dopamine. We also onboarded 20+ testers via QR codes, clocking 100+ mock sends without a single dropout. Bonus: Our Degen Mode bet resolved a real gossip poll with token payouts, proving the social-economic loop works. From idea to swipeable app in under 72 hours? Hackathon gold.

What we learned

Web3 UX is 90% psychology: Friction kills virality, so "invisible" abstractions like AA are table stakes, users shouldn't know (or care) it's on-chain. Parsing natural language for actions (@-sends) taught us the power (and pitfalls) of AI-lite rules over full NLP. Team-wise, async collab thrives on over-communication; we leaned on Notion threads for "why" docs amid code chaos.

What's next for Gasless Gossip

Post-hack, we're gunning for mainnet: Integrate Starknet mainnet o. Expand with voice-to-transfer (e.g., "Hey Siri, tip @user $10") via Whisper API. Roll out the Gift Marketplace for trading level-unlocked NFTs, and launch a "Gossip DAO" where top earners vote on features with @-weighted tokens. Community beta in Q1 2026, with memecoin airdrops for early senders. Long-term? Evolve into the "Venmo of Web3 social," partnering with DAOs for gated chats. The playground's just warming up—join the leak?
