Inspiration

Climate change is one of the biggest issues that humanity is facing today. Therefore, we believe that everyone has a role in addressing it. We were inspired to create a project , analyzing data about the impact of industries in Canada on climate change , to encourage individuals and businesses to take action.

What it does

This should highlight which industries are most wasteful in accordance to how much CO2 emissions they produce and how much they contribute to the economy. We can conclude that some industries should be regulated more so that they do not pollute so much when they do not even make profit. They could in fact contribute more to the economy by investing in having "green" equipment/material.

How we built it

Building our project involved multiple steps.

  1. We collected data on greenhouse gas emissions and industry revenue from data provided by Statistics Canada including
  2. We accepted the challenge of analyzing, linking , merging and associating data from the source since this information wasn’t provided beforehand
  3. We cleaned and processed the data using Python through google collab
  4. We created graphics to make the data more visual using seaborn
  5. We created a website using html, css and some javascript.
  6. We input all the information that we collected in the website
  7. We added cool graphics and images in the website to make the presentation fun and interesting.

Challenges we ran into

Merging all the data together was hard because the two tables they were pulled from were in different formats. Eventually, we realized they both followed NAICS classification except their codes were written differently. Making a graph that can present the story we wanted to tell with the new tools that we learned (seaborn and pandas) proved to be difficult. The biggest challenges that our team faced were finding reliable and up-to-date data on greenhouse gas emissions by industry in Canada and establish a link between those two topics. Unlike most other teams , our team “Syntax Errors” had to collect the data and merge it correctly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that in only in 20 hours our team was able to create a website with analyzed, informative and visually engaging data. We also feel proud that we have contributed in raising awareness about climate change and its contributing factors.

What we learned

With the help of mentors and organizers of Dawson Data Journalism challenge , we learned the correct way to visually present data and specific codes that helped code information about our project. Through this challenge , we educated ourselves about data behind greenhouse gas emissions and industry revenue in Canada. Overall , Dawson Data Journalism challenge granted us an opportunity to gain valuable experience in data cleaning, processing , and visualization.

What's next for Gas Emissions by industry to revenue by industry in Canada

Moving forward, we hope to update and expand our dataset to include more recent information about our topic. We also want to continue improving our website to provide people easily accessible and interactive information for them to understand the complex relationship between industry revenue and greenhouse gas emissions in Canada
