Inspiration

Growing up in the states from a first generation, low income background, there were many struggles that my family and I faced when it came to accessing healthcare resources for our family. Benefits were often confusing, and with my dad hardly being around, my mom struggled to raise her family alone. Medical care was something we hoped we never needed because her taking off work sometimes meant we had to skip meals. Now that I'm older, I made it my path to give back to communities who faced the same struggles my family did when it came to accessing healthcare. Everyone should have access to it regardless of your background.

What it does

We designed an app that reduces the amount of times someone needs to go to an appointment in order to be fully diagnosed with breast cancer. This makes it easier for patients to see a doctor because they don't have to take off work. The app uses predictive AI to fully confirm that breast cancer is there, and at what stage, with only one in person appointment (to get the mammogram). However, the patient will initially put in all their information, which skips the administrative paperwork. This provides exclusivity in who gets screened and who doesn't. Not only that, in conjunction with the data the app gets from the information the patient provides, and the scans from the mammography, the patient will be able to know if they have breast cancer, what stage, and know what happens next. They can enter their insurance company (or lack thereof) and the app will tell them what's covered and what options they have if they don't.

Challenges we faced

In building this project, we faced barriers in continents, cultures, and expertise. Working with strangers in different time zones really pushed us to become nimble in how we communicate and on what platform.
