Inspiration
Reddit is full of communities that thrive on daily rituals — checking in, building streaks, and celebrating small wins together. We wanted a game that felt calm and rewarding rather than competitive, where showing up every day actually means something.
What it does
Streak Garden gives every player a personal flower in a shared community garden. Once a day, you play a short timing-based watering mini-game — tap when the moving marker lands in the gold zone. Consecutive days build your streak, growing your flower through five stages: Seed → Sprout → Bud → Bloom → Radiant.
Every tap (from every player) also feeds a shared Community Goal bar. When the whole subreddit hits the daily target together, everyone unlocks a special rare flower for the day. Players can also visit each other's flowers and send "Sunlight" as a small social gift, and rename their own flower for personal expression.
How it uses real-world data
The server calls the free Open-Meteo weather API once a day. Real weather (rain, mist, snow, etc.) changes the in-game sky theme and grants a bonus growth day for "Perfect" waters — tying the garden to something alive and changing outside the app.
How we built it
Built on Reddit's Devvit Web platform with Phaser 4 for the game rendering (all art is generated procedurally at runtime — no external image assets — so every flower can be recolored per user). The backend uses Hono routes and Devvit's Redis store to track streaks, the shared community goal, and daily "sunlight" gifts, and calls the Reddit API to resolve usernames per player.
Challenges we ran into
Getting a Devvit Web app fully set up, authenticated, and deployed entirely from a mobile-only environment (no desktop terminal) was the biggest challenge — every CLI login and upload step needed a fresh OAuth code. We also iterated a lot on mobile UI contrast and onboarding clarity after real playtesting feedback showed players didn't immediately understand the watering mini-game, which led to adding a persistent on-screen banner and clearer instructional overlays.
What we learned
Small onboarding details — a single sentence banner, a bold "tap now" prompt during the mini-game — make a huge difference in whether new players understand a game in the first five seconds.
What's next
Daily rotating "weather-themed" rare flowers, a real leaderboard view, and comment-based flower naming so the community can co-create flower lore together.
