Inspiration

A majority of our team members come from areas in Missouri which struggle from the problem that is food deserts. Food deserts are areas in which a community finds it difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. Nutrition and our diets contribute to so many problems in our nation and communities as they impact nearly every aspect of our physical and mental lives.

Solution

To tackle this, we created a highly accessible and interactive website that guides a user through the very steps of creating a garden from start to finish. We placed our main efforts in collecting data from multiple sources and not only combining it into user-friendly data, but also presenting users with a plotting of their garden based on their entered metrics such as their garden's location and their garden size.

Our generated gardens are designed to produce garden plots that map out one's selected crops in a size efficient manner ensuring our users will find the best recommended practices, placements, and care to ensure their gardens production and sustainability.

Process

We created a database using SqLite by pulling from Perenual API and filtering in the crops we wanted to include. Using a Python Flask app, we connected to our database to query results and create new rows. For our Frontend, we created a React App that allows for dynamic information displays. Using Python and MatPlotLib we attempted creating a plot to map out a garden layout for the user. We were able to successfully create these plots, but struggled with implementing them to display in the frontend.
