Inspiration
I wanted to create a playful strategy game that turns an ordinary garden into a colorful battlefield. My goal was to make tower defense humorous, approachable, and easy to understand on a phone.
What It Does
Garden Grudge: Ripe for Battle is a portrait tower-defense game where fruit defenders protect the Golden Basket from waves of invading vegetables. Players build defenses, manage Juice, choose upgrades, and harvest fruit for rewards and special attacks.
How I Built It
I built the prototype with ChatGPT and OpenAI Codex using HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, Three.js, and the Web Audio API. Everything is packaged locally so the game runs as a self-contained offline web experience.
Challenges I Ran Into
The biggest challenges was keeping the battlefield readable on a small portrait screen, teaching the game without overwhelming new players, and balancing strategy with a fast session. I also worked to maintain smooth performance while meeting strict offline and packaging requirements.
Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of
I created a complete, replayable game with an original setting, distinct characters, escalating waves, upgrades, a boss battle, and clear win and loss states. I'm especially proud that new players could quickly understand and enjoy the experience.
What I Learned
I learned that a strong core loop matters more than adding many disconnected features. Frequent playtesting also showed me how much clear feedback, concise instructions, and readable controls improve a strategy game.
What's Next For Garden Grudge: Ripe for Battle!
The next step would be expanding the garden with additional defenders, enemies, environments, upgrades, and challenges. I would keep the same approachable grow, battle, and harvest rhythm while offering more strategic combinations to explore.
