Inspiration

We got our product inspiration from our deep concern about the serious problems faced by Southeast Asia, especially in our own country, Indonesia, namely the problem with the use of disposable plastic waste. Seeing the negative impact it has on the environment and society, we felt compelled to create a solution and educate everyone on the importance of understanding the use of single-use plastic waste to make the earth cleaner from single-use plastic.

Data regarding the problems

Data shows that the problem of single-use plastic waste has reached alarming levels since its introduction in the 1950s. The United States alone produces tens of billions of water bottles every year, leading to massive plastic stockpiles. The production of polystyrene and plastic packaging also contributes to the significant buildup of plastic waste. At least 14 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, threatening marine life and ecosystems. Research indicates that microplastic pollution on land is more severe than in the ocean, with serious consequences for all living organisms.

In Indonesia, the growth of plastic production has exacerbated carbon emissions and particulate matter pollution from coal combustion. Coal mining activities for plastics production are increasing rapidly, accounting for more than ten percent of the country's total emissions. Additionally, Indonesia is a major source of marine plastic pollution, with over 4,000 species of fish and 12 million people working in the fishing industry being the primary victims. Plastic waste from Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam contributes more to the oceans than the rest of the world combined. Initiatives to reduce single-use plastics and increase plastic recycling are crucial to addressing this problem.

What it does

We've developed an adventure game called Garda Green, where players experience the real challenge of navigating a river while avoiding plastic waste. Through this game, our goal is to promote a deeper understanding of environmental issues through trivia while providing an enjoyable experience.

In Garda Green, players skate along a river filled with obstacles in the form of plastic waste, which they must avoid to reach the final destination. Collecting stars increases their score, and by doing so, we hope players will feel challenged while learning about the dangers and environmental impacts of plastic waste. We aim to deliver effective education alongside a fun and engaging gaming experience.

How we built it

We developed this game using Flutter and Flame Engine within approximately 3 weeks. The process started with planning the game concept and level design, followed by developing the game logic and player interactions with the in-game environment using Flame Engine. Then we spent time creating the graphical assets that support the game experience. Additionally, we conducted tests to ensure the game was multi-platform ready, allowing players to access the game from Android, iOS, MacOS, and the Web.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenge in creating the Garda Green game was to create a game using Flutter and Flame Engine. Flame Engine was something new to us and something we had never used before. We had to learn the engine from scratch and implement the game logic and interactions in the game in a relatively short period. Another challenge was to make sure that the game would run well on different platforms, so we had to adapt and optimize the game so that it could be played on different devices with different operating systems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have completed this game with high quality and smooth operation. Despite encountering various challenges and obstacles during its development, we managed to overcome them all through our determination and hard work. Through the dedication and persistent efforts of our team, we created an engaging and educational game experience focused on the issue of single-use plastic waste in rivers. We are proud of our game and its positive contribution to helping players understand the importance of environmental protection.

What we learned

We learned a lot of valuable lessons beyond the technical knowledge and skills we already had. One of these lessons was gaining a deep understanding of game development using Flutter and Flame Engine, technologies that were new to us. We learned how to implement game logic, level design, and player interaction with the game environment.

Additionally, we gained insight into the challenges and strategies of optimizing the game for different platforms. We learned how to adapt and overcome technical and performance differences between different operating systems. This experience also taught us the importance of solid teamwork and effective communication.

What's next for Garda Green

We don't want to stop here; next, we are determined to expand this game, making it bigger, more interesting, and even more educational about the problem of single-use plastic waste. Our plans include adding more exciting features, levels, and challenges for players.

Additionally, we plan to integrate deeper information about the impact of single-use plastic waste on the environment and solutions that can be implemented in everyday life. We hope this game can create understanding and awareness about the importance of protecting the environment from single-use plastic waste.
