Inspiration
We were inspired by the need for environmental consciousness and sustainable waste management when developing our Garbage Collector game. Most people do not understand how to properly dispose of waste in the correct bins. We aim to create an engaging and educational experience for a younger audience that not only entertains but also instills the importance of sorting waste effectively.
What it does
In our game, players are challenged to sort various types of garbage into designated bins based on their recyclability, compostability, or disposal methods. We utilized cartoonish graphics and game elements to better appeal to a younger audience. It is very important to educate the younger generation because they are our future. Drawing inspiration from real-life waste management practices, we incorporated elements such as a limited number of tries to simulate the importance of waste management. Even a single plastic bag can severely damage recycling equipment and waste your taxpayer dollars.
How we built it
Initially, we used Pygame as our method of creating the Garbage Collector game. We had ran into issues where we were unable to implement core features into the game when using Pygame, so we decided to switch to Unity to develop our game further. All of the artwork for the game was done by Katherine Nechyba.
Challenges we ran into
Some features, such as collision detection was not functioning properly when we initially used Pygame. It was a difficult decision to use a different program after the many hours spent working on the project in Pygame.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our decision to switch over to Unity was a potentially risky move but had worked out for us in the end. Despite the shift from Pygame to Unity, we maintained the core principles and objectives of our project, ensuring continuity in gameplay mechanics.
What we learned
Our transition from Pygame to Unity for the development of Garbage Collector taught us invaluable lessons about the importance of flexibility and choosing the right tools for the job. While Pygame served as an excellent starting point, we recognized the need to pivot to Unity to realize our vision for the game.
What's next for Garbage Collector
Our focus remains on educating people on good sustainability practices in our everyday lives. If we continue this project in the future, we would aim to integrate more informative content regarding waste management through introducing more types of garbage or other obstacles within the game such as a timer.
