GaonSahayak AI — Making Government Benefits Easier to Access

Inspiration

Government schemes and scholarships can provide valuable support to students and families, but understanding the eligibility criteria, application procedures, and document requirements is not always easy. Information is spread across different portals, and official instructions can be difficult to understand for people who are unfamiliar with online application processes.

I wanted to build something that makes this journey simpler: a platform where people can explore scheme information, ask questions in simple language, and prepare the documents they need for online applications.

That idea became GaonSahayak AI.

What It Does

GaonSahayak AI is an AI-powered government benefits assistant designed to make scheme information easier to understand and application preparation more accessible.

The platform brings together several useful capabilities:

  • Scheme Discovery: Explore scheme information and find links to relevant official government portals.
  • AI Scheme Assistant: Select a scheme, ask questions about its application process, and receive AI-generated explanations.
  • Language Support: Choose a response language to make guidance easier to understand.
  • FormSaathi Document Studio: Resize and compress supported images to specified dimensions or file-size limits.
  • Image Preview and Download: Review processed images and download the resulting files.
  • Saved Schemes: Keep track of schemes that may be useful for future reference.

The goal is to reduce the effort required to move from understanding a scheme to preparing for an application.

How I Built It

I built GaonSahayak AI as a web application using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, with a Node.js and Express backend for server-side functionality.

I integrated the Google Gemini API to power the AI assistant. The backend handles AI requests so that the API key does not need to be exposed in the browser.

For document preparation, I used browser-based image processing capabilities, including the Canvas API, to resize and compress images without unnecessarily uploading personal photographs or signatures to the application server.

The application is deployed on Vercel, making it accessible through a live web demo.

Challenges I Faced

One of the main challenges was combining AI guidance and practical document utilities into a single, easy-to-use experience.

Another challenge was making the AI useful without encouraging users to rely on unsupported information. Government eligibility requirements, deadlines, and document rules can change, so the application needs to distinguish available information from details that still require official verification.

I also had to consider image quality and file-size constraints. Reducing an image below a requested file-size limit should not mean silently compromising its usability.

These challenges influenced the product's emphasis on simple workflows, visible source links, privacy-conscious processing, and clear limitations.

What I Learned

Building this project helped me understand how a frontend, backend, and external AI API work together in a real application.

I also gained practical experience with server-side API key management, asynchronous requests, image processing in the browser, file-size validation, and designing a user experience around a real-world problem.

Most importantly, I learned that building a useful AI product involves more than generating responses. Reliability, usability, privacy, and access to trustworthy information matter just as much.

What's Next

The long-term vision is to expand GaonSahayak AI into a more comprehensive government-benefits platform.

Future improvements include a broader catalogue of source-verified schemes, better eligibility matching, document requirement presets for individual application portals, and automated updates using authorized and reliable information sources.

These capabilities will be introduced as their data sources and workflows become available and can be verified.

Responsible Use

GaonSahayak AI is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any government department. AI-generated explanations are intended to assist users, not replace official instructions or eligibility decisions. Users should verify important requirements and submit applications through the relevant official portals.
