Inspiration
Two months ago, I faced challenges navigating public transportation in Kathmandu as a newcomer. Traveling daily from Maharajgunj to my college in Satdobato, I struggled to find reliable information on which bus to take, where to catch it, or where to get off. Existing alternatives like ridesharing apps were costly, and asking for guidance wasn’t always effective. Noticing this problem, we thought of creating an app to help newcomers, tourists, and locals easily use public transportation. The app will give clear and reliable information to make daily travel easy and stress-free for everyone.
What it does
It provides users with directions and information about the nearest bus stop, including the type of vehicle arriving and the distance they need to walk from their current location to catch the bus.
How we built it
We built the app by scraping data on public vehicle routes and bus stops due to the lack of public datasets. Using the user's current location, we developed an algorithm to show the nearest bus stop, the type of vehicle arriving, and the walking distance. The app’s simple interface makes it easy for users to navigate public transportation efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was finding routes and stops for public vehicles, as there were no available public datasets to use. As a result, we had to create our own datasets by scraping information on public vehicle routes and stops.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of successfully creating an app that solves a real problem for newcomers, tourists, and locals in Kathmandu. Despite the challenge of finding public vehicle data, we managed to scrape and build our own dataset of bus routes and stops. The app now provides accurate and reliable information on the nearest bus stop, bus types, and walking distances, making daily travel easier for users.
What we learned
We learned the importance of gathering and managing public transportation data, especially when no reliable public datasets are available. Building our own dataset through web scraping was a valuable experience. We also gained insights into the challenges of providing accurate and real-time information to users, and how crucial it is to make the user interface simple and easy to use.
What's next for Gantabya (गन्तव्य)
- This app is not limited to Kathmandu we can expand it to various cities in Nepal.
- Use advertising molal to generate a revinew.
- Partner with bus operators for accurate data.
