Inspiration

Imagine running a marathon to opera music. It just doesn't make sense. That's the problem facing gamers today; while a relaxing melody might fit with your lowkey simulation game, the same soundtrack is not going to cut when you're in the middle of a shootout or when your city is about to be destroyed. That's where PlaySquared comes in. We help you find the right playlists for the right game and mood, so you're never again stuck listening to soft acoustics in the midst of a battle again.

What it does

  • Our project is a web-based application aimed at building better the gaming and music communities in a unique way. The app serves as a platform for gamers to share and associate music playlists with specific video games.
  • This way, the app not only creates a sense of community but also increases visibility of unknown artists as well as unpopular games.
  • Users can create accounts, upload their own playlists, and view and access other users' playlists. Users are also able to search for playlists by videogame tag.

How we built it

  • We used Figma to create a simple wireframe of the website.
  • We then focused on building our site using the MERN tech stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.JS) and used Material-UI for the front-end.
  • We shared code via GitHub.
  • We attempted deployment via Heroku, but got it to run successfully locally.

Challenges we ran into

  • As 3/4 members of our team are beginners and none of us had a lot of experience with React, taking up this project was pretty challenging.
  • We ran into several issues while coding and pushing code to repositories, which we solved with each others' as well as mentors', help.
  • One of the biggest challenges was collaborating on one project along with four people. However, we were able to divide up tasks. We hung out on Google Meet to talk about any problems we ran into and shared our thoughts and random ideas as well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We are proud that we were able to develop a full-stack app with most of of the functionality we had planned on achieving and enjoyed tackling the issues and bugs as a team! We learnt a lot of things in just 36 hours.

What we learned

  • As none of the team members had prior knowledge of React and MongoDB, we learnt quite a lot about these technologies by jumping right into building something llike PlaySquared.
  • We also learned time-management and collaboration since we're from different timezones and the hackathon was virtual.

What's next for PlaySquared

We will be focusing on deploying our web app properly and using our domain (playsquared.tech). We'd also like to add more functionality with the music side of things, potentially embedding the playlists within the site itself.

(Note: Best Beginner's Hack: It's the first hackathon for 3/4 members, Best Women's Hack: 2/4 of the team members are women.)
