Inspiration
We wanted to create a word puzzle that wasn’t just a solitary daily chore, but a living, breathing community event. Traditional word games let you share your score grid, but they don't let you impact anyone else's game. Letterset changes that. It brings the thrilling, competitive scramble of a live anagram board directly into the Reddit feed, turning passive scrolling into a community-wide race.
How We Built It
The project is built entirely on top of Reddit's developer platform (Devvit 0.13.x) and leverages a dual-layer architecture:
- The Frontend (The Game Loop): Built as an ultra-responsive HTML5 Canvas/TypeScript application inside Devvit’s secure
useWebViewlayer. It features smooth UI state machines, custom particle systems for satisfying "pangram fireworks," and an dynamic layout optimized for both Reddit mobile and desktop viewports. - The Backend & State Layer: Powered by Devvit Redis. Because Reddit posts are stateless by nature, we utilized Redis sorted sets (
zAdd/zRange) to manage real-time global leaderboards, asynchronous player matchmaking, and secure score verification.
The "Hook"
What makes Letterset addictive is its two-pronged social hook:
- First-Finder Claims: When a user discovers a highly complex word or a rare pangram from today's letters, they permanently stamp their username on it for the entire subreddit to see. It transforms word-hunting into a land grab.
- Community Ranks: Players don't just compete against each other; they collectively build a daily "Subreddit Rank" from Beginner to Genius, driving asynchronous collaboration.
Challenges We Faced
- Stateless Synchronization: Handling real-time player progression across thousands of independent Reddit app frames required a highly optimized, atomic message-passing protocol between the webview frontend and the Redis backend.
- Mobile-First Constraints: Standard canvas layouts clip heavily within the compact Reddit mobile feed container. We had to implement a strict, aspect-ratio-driven responsive scaling engine to ensure the letter rack remains perfectly interactive on any device.
What We Learned
Building Letterset taught us the true potential of interactive, embedded social applications. We discovered how to deeply integrate Reddit's unique identity layers—like subreddits, user flair potential, and mod-driven community drops—directly into core gameplay loops rather than just treating the platform as an external iframe wrapper.
