Inspiration
TikTok has been one of the influential social media platforms in the world in the past few years. This is due to their short, addicting, instant gratification videos. It is a great way to reach a wide audience, however it also affects many users psychologically, causing shortened attention spans and even ADHD. The vast majority of TikTok users in the US are students, meaning that shortened attention spans are not beneficial and even detrimental for studying and information retention.
There is a TikTok format that is popular where there's a video, usually of Subway Surfers or Minecraft Parkour, that plays in the background with text that pops up in the middle. There is also Text-To-Speech that matches those words, which are usually a Reddit story. Usually, it would be hard to read and pay attention to the entire text due to its length, but this format allows the full attention of the viewer to the story.
This was our inspiration. What if we build a platform where students can upload their lecture notes and it creates a video of this format? Would it allow students to retain information more by watching notes in this contemporary, non-traditional format?
What it does
Our product takes in text or a .txt file to generate a "Reddit story Tik-Tok" format video in the user's browser.
How we built it
We used the vanilla tech stack of HTML, CSS, and Javascript, challenging ourselves to push the limits of bare web design without the reliance of other packages.
Challenges we ran into
Our most significant challenge was syncing the TTS to the words on the screen. The video format only shows a few words at a time, therefore the TTS has to be timed so that it's not too fast or too slow. We weren't completely able to match it perfectly, but we got it as close as we could in the time that we had.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the UI and basic functionality of the video and the text.
What we learned
We learned that matching TTS with certain words on the screen without the use of external APIs is a real challenge.
What's next for Gameplay Study Tool.ai
We hope to incorporate a backend to cache previous notes that students can replay at anytime in case they want to revisit previous material.
