Inspiration

GameOn was inspired by a common community problem: people want to play sports but often struggle to find available players, suitable groups, or nearby events. I saw an opportunity to use accessible technology to make recreational sports easier to organize for people of all ages.

What it does

GameOn connects people through sport. Players can mark themselves as available for a preferred activity, discover others who want to play, or create events that the community can view and join. The app supports football, basketball, tennis, table tennis, badminton, squash, padel, and running groups.

How I built it

I built GameOn as an accessible mobile and web experience. Firebase powers the app’s backend services, Netlify handles deployment, and OpenAI Codex supported the development process—from turning ideas into working features to solving technical problems. I also received occasional advice from friends working in IT.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was building a complete application without being a professional developer. Turning an idea into a functional product required learning throughout the process, troubleshooting unfamiliar issues, and continuously refining the app. Working independently also meant taking responsibility for its design, development, testing, and deployment.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm especially proud of GameOn’s clean design, ease of use, and working event-discovery experience. More importantly, I built a product with the potential to create meaningful social impact by helping people become more active, meet others, and strengthen their local sporting communities.

What I learned

I learned that a clear idea, persistence, and modern AI-assisted development tools can make software creation more accessible—even without a traditional coding background. I also learned how important simplicity is: users should be able to find players or create an event with as little friction as possible.

What's next for GameOn

Next, I want GameOn to support larger sporting events and make player discovery even faster and more effective. Our long-term goal is to grow the platform into a thriving sports community where anyone can find an opportunity to play, organize an event, and connect with others.
