Inspiration
As gamers, we noticed how messy it can get to track new releases, reviews, and recommendations across multiple platforms. We wanted a single, centralized hub — like IMDb for games — where players can easily explore, discover, and organize everything about video games.
What it does
GameDB is a game discovery and tracking platform. Users can:
Browse games with descriptions, ratings, and genres.
Search and filter by platform, release date, or category.
Add games to their personal list (wishlist, currently playing, completed).
Share opinions and discover trending titles.
How we built it
Frontend: React + TailwindCSS for a fast, clean, and responsive UI.
Backend: Node.js + Express to handle APIs and game data.
Database: MongoDB for storing game details and user lists.
APIs: Integrated with a public game database API (like RAWG/IGDB) for up-to-date game info.
Deployment: Hosted on [Netlify/Vercel] for frontend and [Heroku/Render] for backend.
Challenges we ran into
Finding and integrating a reliable, free game API.
Normalizing messy data (genres, release dates, platforms).
Making search/filter smooth and fast for large datasets.
Coordinating frontend-backend integration under time pressure.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a functional and visually polished platform within hackathon time.
Seamless integration of a live game API.
Created a scalable structure that can support more community features in the future.
Seeing the idea come to life exactly how we imagined it.
What we learned
How to consume and optimize external APIs in real-world projects.
Building a full-stack project under tight deadlines.
Importance of UI/UX in making a platform fun and engaging.
Teamwork, version control, and dividing tasks effectively.
What's next for GameDB
Adding social features (friends, reviews, leaderboards).
Personalized recommendations using ML models.
Game trailers, screenshots, and media integration.
Mobile app version for easier access.
Monetization opportunities (premium features, ads, or affiliate game links).
