Inspiration
With the world cup hype, our team was inspired by how much it has brought together so many different people. Watch sports is fun but its always a better time when in the prescens of other fans. With soccer not being a popular sport in the states we were curious to see how we could help to connect like minded fans.
What it does
Gameday provides users to the ablilty to create watch parties with other in the area.
How we built it
We used React (bootstrapped with Vite) for the frontend, with React Router handling client-side navigation between the home page, match details, and My Parties. For the backend, we went with Firebase (Firestore) for storing and syncing watch party data in real time, and Firebase Authentication with Google Sign-In so people don't need to create yet another account just to use the app.
Challenges we ran into
A blank page turned out to be caused by an empty page component, which led to a file-extension mismatch (JSX in a .js file instead of .jsx). Google sign-in itself got stuck in an infinite loop from a one-line typo , and even after that was fixed, a misspelled environment variable name kept our authDomain silently undefined for several more rounds of debugging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting a full Google OAuth flow working end-to-end with Firebase Authentication
What we learned
Real hands-on experience with Firebase Auth and Firestore in a production-style React app and version control.
What's next for Gameday
We would like to develope it into other sports.
