Inspiration
I used to have a GameBoy in my youth, playing the games I had for it hours and hours on end. After learning the existence of GBDK 2020, I decided to learn how to create a simple ROM for the Super GameBoy to complete the Explore Hardware challenge(which allowed emulators, which I opted to use instead as I unfortunately don't have extra game carriages laying around).
What it does
It displays a picture of a dog who happens to have a human hand holding a coffee cup before disappearing onto a screen with text that also plays a quick sound-bite.
How I built it
I used (GBDK 2020)[https://bgb.bircd.org/], a C wrapper to the normal GameBoy assembly language to build it and used the bgb emulator to test out the ROM.
Challenges I ran into
I had some issues at first with make to build the project, in which it wasn't finding where I had GBDK 2020 installed, but I eventually fixed it by correctly setting its PATH.
Accomplishments that I proud of
- I learned a bit more C
- I got to see how the GameBoy operated
- I got to create my first homebrew ROM!
What I learned
- I learned a bit more of C, which is a language that I don't often use
- I learned how really difficult it is to program on a GameBoy
- I learned about its limitations and how not taking them into consideration can lead to unexpected results.
