Inspiration
Gameball is inspired by the tradition of awarding a game ball to the player who made the most significant impact on the game.
What it does
Users can vote for a player before the game starts and then change their vote as many times as they want throughout the game, but for less points as the game progresses. Fans compete with one another to lock in Gameball votes at the highest scores and they receive those points only if that player earns the Gameball at the end of the game. Who decides which player earns the Gameball? The fans do, with their votes! And fans compete with their friends and family over the course of several games or a season, just like a batting average.
How we built it
We put together a web-based version of the game using MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js. Our plan is to build iOS and Android versions of Gameball.
Challenges we ran into
The time constraints were difficult because we had a big ambition!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We worked on this project several years ago but had to shut down operations of it. We were happy to have started the process of reviving it during Baseball Hack Day 2019. We never stopped believing it was a worthwhile idea to pursue and we still haven't seen anything like it in the app stores.
What we learned
We learned that building a product is hard work. It takes an extraordinary effort from design and development and operations in order to make an extraordinary product.
What's next for Gameball
We are excited about seeing where we can take Gameball. Our next step is to get a working beta version of the app for iOS so we can test it out among friends and family.
