Inspiration
We as a team saw that when we made any web games it was very challenging for us to place the games in a spot where people can easily access the game. We wished there was an application or website like steam that made it possible for people to play our games or a place where we can show of our games. So we made Game hub an open-source platform where web game developers can upload their games to the public.
What it does
Game hub displays web games in a fast easy way. By showing the latest and greatest games that have been posted to the site. In one place so that people can quickly and easily pick and play what games they want.
How we built it
We built Game hub by using a mix of front-end and back-end technologies. For the backend to make the games we used python and used a module called pygame which let us make some of the games we want to display. For the front end, we used CSS and HTML.
Challenges we ran into
One of the big challenges we ran into was scope. We didn't know how complicated we wanted to make the game. So in the beginning we tried to make a retro donkey kong/Mario type game which turned was too much of an undertaking we had. So we ditched that idea and made some simpler more manageable games and made many of them. Another issue we ran into was hyperlinking the text on the chrome extension to the websites where the games were being hosted. It turned out that since we were using have scripted the process was very hard. So we ditched the javascript part of the application and did the project with more of a focus on HTML and CSS.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how we had the idea of making the Game Hub application into a chrome extension. Making Game hub into a chrome extension helped make a seamless experience for the user. Which is one of the big goals of our project. Another Accomplishment we were proud of is how we were able to learn pygame. This was our first time diving deep into pygame and we are very happy that we were able to pick up a lot of the concepts in the module.
What we learned
We as a group learned a lot about game design and how it works. For example, we learned that one of the strongest tools in-game design is the rectangle. It acts like a hitbox that helps us with things like collisions. We also learned the python pygame module and the syntax behind the program.
What's next for Game Hub
We plan to in the future make a website for Game hub. This will be another way for the user to experience Game Hub. Another thing we plan on doing is making a form where web game developers can submit their games to be added.
