Inspiration
Game-A-Day is inspired by the advancements in LLM workflows, specifically almost fully autonomous and smart AI using frameworks like Openclaw.
I also wanted to contribute to GameMaker development; I forked an open-source MCP server and am continuously iterating on it on the daily game workflow. I also share all the GameMaker project source code generated by our friendly game dev agent potnoodledev
I also tried to keep it as engaging as possible by focusing on hypercasual games that Reddit Daily Games users might be accustomed to
What it does
Game-A-Day allows players to play a new unique game every day. Users can propose a new game and vote for the game they want to see tomorrow, which our friendly AI agent will create.
The games will still be curated for now so as to weed out inappropriate or impossible concepts, but the main goal is to make this as autonomous and flexible as it can be
How we built it
The project uses the GameMaker template provided by Reddit, and connects it to a forked MCP server so that LLMs can make their own games even via natural language. It uses cron scripts to process voting and game versioning.
I also made some mod controls to make certain this manual for now, such as moderating game concepts and approving them
Challenges we ran into
The GameMaker MCP we have is still as fully featured as can be, and probably won't be powerful enough for more complicated games. I also had several issues with deploying the GameMaker app cleanly with the daily game updates, but am slowly making it more robust
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Daily game generation workflow is still a work in progress but getting it to work with creating automated GameMaker builds was very satisfying!
Also Getting the UI to a state where it feels natural on mobile for different kinds of games -- it's not perfect but I think we can refine it to make pretty naturally mobile games after a few more daily game iterations
What we learned
Devvit is a fun platform to build on when iterating as quickly as I needed to for today's hackathon!
Also still learning how to improve LLM workflows, but one useful process has been keeping a devlog. Potnoodledev uses it not just for the games but on the web app / devvit code as we improve it. Creating the devlog helps future sessions go better, especially with defined workflows such as the daily game rotation
What's next for Game A Day - Daily Open-Source Gamemaker Games
Keep building and improving! The goal is for PotNoodleDev to be making these games autonomously and becoming better and better. Right now he's mainly running from a local Ubuntu laptop running Openclaw, but eventually I'd like to host him on the cloud and be free ☁️🪽
I'd love for him to also be interactable with on reddit posts and he'll be able to take input naturally and improve.
I'm also inspired by recent agent-focused apps like Moltbook (sidenote: I made one for agents collaborating together to make music: https://apocalypseradio.xyz/), and have some really wild ideas on how agents (along with their humans) can collaborate together on making games
