Inspiration
Since young, I am a big fan of X-men and always like the Gambit character. However, there is not many stories, not to mention games that revolves around Gambit. Through a couple movies from Marvel, I got some inspiration to create the card throwing skill as a game. Along with X-men 97 intro video, Gambit runs along with the team to fight against Magneto and team, which makes me hope to design this game in multiplayer and fight alongside with his comrades.
What it does
Gambit is able to spawn a card and flick it out like characters in a casino movie. Special abilities include flicking the card in front of the player and store up, which can then be shoot out by touching it. Card can be charge up and gain control in midair and higher explosive power. Lastly, Gambit can spawn his rod which can help him in melee combat. The rod can be spined to deflect attacks and also mass stun nearby enemies. The finale of the rod holds power that could be charge up like the card and send out a nova damage.
How we built it
With the use of ShapeXR, the low-fi prototype creates a simple visualization of how the game can be played. Due to limitation of 50 scenes in ShapeXR, 3 projects were created for various skill demonstration.
Challenges we ran into
As there is no programming available to create loops in ShapeXR, many scenes and assets were painstakingly duplicated and adjusted manually. Finding assets can be a challenge too because finding the right 3d models that are available for free is not easy. However, that gets me to think of finding what is necessary and not to be distracted by very beautiful 3d art.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I manage to create a rough idea of what I have imagined the game to be like. Although I can't chain up the whole experience, I did stitch up the video to make the idea easy to visualize.
What we learned
6 weeks of hackathon is long but that easily makes me complacent. As such, I try to create a few scenes every day or every 1-2 days to keep the momentum going. I also learn that ideation through ShapeXR is very similar to 'straight ahead' approach of animation. Some ideas are too far to plan the execution, but as I do one after another, I continue to have new ideas to present the features I want to create.
What's next for Gambit VR Ideation with ShapeXR
I worked with a group of polytechnic students to co-develop a working prototype in Unity 3D. I hope I can continue further this game idea by designing a proper level to infuse the skills in the challenge.
