Inspiration
We were inspired by a weekly "What are you watching this weekend" thread on Reddit. It sparked a ton of conversations when people found common ground in interests, and provided a sense of community. (It was also where we found our next show to binge!) We wanted to recreate this experience but in a more accessible and friendly way.
What it does
gALLery allows users to share (anonymously, or not), the shows, music, and hobbies that they have been enjoying. Users can filter items based on their favorite tags, add likes to support their favorite shows/music/hobbies, and bookmark things for later!
How we built it
gALLery is built with the following technologies:
- MongoDB Atlas
- Flask/Jinja
- Adobe Illustrator (for the landing page illustrations)
Challenges we ran into
Hanna: I didn't have much web development experience, so there was a bit of a learning curve for me especially, learning how to use different APIs and making calls to them inside of python.
Amy: It was my first time using vanilla JS. It was also challenging to create a bright/friendly vibe to attract visitors—like with normal galleries/
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Hanna: I'm proud of mostly just learning more about the different frameworks that Amy and I used, and being able to understand the different components of our site. (And the favicon that I made!)
Amy: I'm proud of the design and flow of the site! It's simple but also very fun!
What I learned
I learned a lot about integrating websites with the APIs of other websites, and how different types of requests (GET, POST) are handled.
What's next for gALLery
- add user accounts
Thank you all for reading, Amy and Hanna
