Inspiration

The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our generation. Despite the abundance of environmental data, most people and organizations struggle to translate it into meaningful, everyday actions. We wanted to build something that empowers individuals, businesses, and governments to make smarter, greener choices — not with complex reports, but with conversational AI guidance. Inspired by the vision of a “digital twin of Earth,” we created GaiaGPT, an AI-powered sustainability assistant.

What it does

GaiaGPT is an AI sustainability advisor that: • Calculates and explains carbon footprints for activities, products, or organizations. • Suggests eco-friendly alternatives (e.g., greener energy sources, sustainable supply chains). • Visualizes impact with data-driven insights, powered by open datasets. • Uses natural language conversations to make sustainability approachable for anyone. • Gamifies eco-actions to encourage individuals and teams to reduce their footprint.

In short, GaiaGPT transforms climate data into actionable, personalized sustainability insights.

How we built it • Frontend: React + Tailwind for a clean, intuitive, and gamified UI. • Backend: Python (FastAPI) for handling requests, calculations, and dataset integration. • AI Core: GPT-powered conversational engine fine-tuned with sustainability datasets. • Datasets: Open Climate Data, CO₂ emission factors, and UN sustainability metrics. • Math Models: Applied formulas like:

to provide scientifically grounded impact analysis. • Deployment: Hosted on cloud (e.g., Vercel + AWS), with APIs for integration into enterprise systems.

Challenges we ran into • Data accuracy: Different datasets report different emission factors, so normalizing them was tough. • Contextual AI answers: Ensuring the model doesn’t hallucinate numbers but stays factual. • Balancing UX: Making sustainability insights both accurate and understandable for non-experts. • Integration: Handling real-time queries while keeping response times fast.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of • Built a working AI-powered sustainability chatbot in a short time. • Successfully integrated real environmental datasets into conversational outputs. • Designed a gamification layer that encourages eco-friendly behavior. • Created a tool that can be used by individuals, businesses, and governments alike.

What we learned • How to bridge the gap between raw environmental data and real-world decision-making. • The importance of prompt engineering for factual AI in scientific contexts. • That even small UX changes (icons, gamification) can drastically improve user adoption. • Sustainability is not just about tech — it’s about behavioral change, too.
