Forage

is a social nature app built for HackDuke 2026 that turns outdoor moments into shared discoveries. Users photograph plants and animals, get AI-powered species identification and fact-style cards, and earn points and badges for exploring solo or with friends while logging expeditions, tracking them live when needed, and competing on a leaderboard. We wanted to remove the friction between people's desires to be outside in nature and active and the lack of motivation and difficulty finding trails.

We built Gaia as a React Native app on Expo with Expo Router, using Supabase (PostgreSQL + Storage) for data and uploads, Auth0 with expo-auth-session (PKCE) for auth that works in Expo Go, and OpenAI GPT-4o Vision for identification and fact generation.
