Inspiration

Healthcare access gaps in Malawi limit coverage. We built a tool to visualize gaps and optimize clinic placement for maximum impact.

What it does

Interactive map visualizing clinic locations, population coverage, and coverage gaps. Calculates real-time coverage stats and recommends optimal clinic placements to maximize healthcare access.

How we built it

Built with Next.js, React, Leaflet, TypeScript, and TailwindCSS. Processes real population data (GeoTIFF) and clinic locations to calculate 5km coverage radii using Haversine distance.

Challenges we ran into

Processing large GeoTIFF population datasets, integrating Leaflet with Next.js SSR, and optimizing real-time coverage calculations for performance.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Real-time coverage calculations, interactive map with heatmap visualization, AI-powered clinic placement recommendations, and district-level impact analysis.

What we learned

Geospatial data processing, healthcare access modeling, and optimizing map performance with large datasets.

What's next for GAIA health

Integration with live clinic data APIs, mobile app for field workers, predictive analytics for future healthcare needs, and expansion to other countries.
