Inspiration

Sustainable living often feels isolating. People who care don’t know others around them who do. Eco-friendly events are hard to discover unless you already follow the right orgs. Our solution: a shared digital ecosystem where sustainability is social, visible, and rewarding. Inspired by Gaia, the Greek goddess who symbolizes nature, fertility, and planet Earth, gaia is a website where people who care about the planet can connect, share, and celebrate sustainable living.

What it does

Users can post their eco-friendly actions and experiences from events. Organizations and companies can share local sustainability events like cleanups, thrifting, or recycling drives. The community feed, inspired by Pinterest, lets everyone explore, celebrate, and get inspired by sustainable actions.

How we built it

Frontend: Tailwind for our clean, earthy interface Backend: Typescript for handling feeds, posts, and events logic Auth & Data: Supabase for secure login and data tracking AI: Gemini for our gAIa chat bot that teaches users

Challenges we ran into

Databases: backend developers were new to implementing databases; difficult to integrate a large database to the frontend Merge conflicts: making frontend modifications to utilities led to backend failure and vice verse

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Advice application: being able to use the suggestions and comments mentors made on our project to take it to the next level Modern technologies: making use of modern technologies like AI to make a better user experience New technologies: adding interactive map API to accomplish our goal of making it easier for user to find events

What we learned

Databases: became familiar with a new database Workflow: how to designate tasks at an earlier stage to make workflow throughout project more efficient Collaboration and Integration: how to communicate what step in the process each team was on to minimize conflicts and increase efficiency

What's next for gaia

Integrate a point system where users earn points for sustainability habits; once they earn points, they can use them to pay it forward to local organizations and causes they support, creating a halo effect More social media-like interaction on posts A city spotlight and statistics page for communities other than the user's
