Inspiration

In an era of heightened environmental and urban challenges, our objective was to create a platform empowering individuals to voice their concerns about environmental safety and socio-urban injustices.

What it does

Gaia serves as a community-centric platform, similar of platforms like Twitter, designed primarily to amplify the concerns of marginalized urban residents. It enables users to report prevalent urban challenges such as inadequate waste management, dysfunctional subway systems, and inefficient resource allocation. Once reported, fellow community members can prioritize these issues through voting.

Crucially, Gaia autonomously generates and dispatches a report ticket to relevant stakeholders, which include city councils, businesses, educational institutions, and more, ensuring that the concerns are not merely voiced but acted upon.

How we built it

The Gaia application was constructed using the Python FastAPI framework, supported by PostgreSQL for backend operations. Our frontend design blueprint was conceptualized using Figma. We looked into using LlamaIndex to create a chatbot for reporting issues but didn't go down that path due to time constraints.

You can see our front-end implementation here and see our backend GitHub repo here

Challenges we ran into

Our primary challenges revolved around time constraints, which limited our ability to implement the front-end fully. Strategizing immediate revenue streams for our business model was also a long-term concern and an area we hope to address.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite these challenges, we are elated to present a frontend prototype and a seamlessly operational backend API. Another remarkable feat was our team's ability to collaborate effectively, leveraging our diverse skill sets to craft a solution within the given timeframe.

What we learned

We learned the how-tos on rapid prototyping using Figma, which was a first time for many team members. We also learned the server database setup for a minimal viable backend app, which was new to many members. Most importantly, we also learned how to work cross-functionally with a team with diverse skill sets and translate that into our team strength.

What's next for Gaia

Technical Enhancements: Expansion of the API suite.

  1. Transformation of the prototype into a comprehensive mobile application.
  2. Incorporation of an authentication mechanism.
  3. Seamless integration with existing city reporting mechanisms.
  4. AI moderator to take down any posts that are fake or inappropriate.
  5. AI to direct reporting to the appropriate officials.

Strategic Outreach: Forming alliances with local non-profit organizations and grassroots movements. Extensive community outreach programs. Forging partnerships with commercial entities to address issues beyond municipal purview.
