Inspiration

Many North American viewers find soccer difficult to follow because broadcasts often assume prior knowledge of the game, and important moments can happen quickly without explanation.

What it does

Gaffer’s Chalkboard is a live match companion web app that explains what’s happening on the field in real time using clear, soccer-native language. It runs alongside a live match to help viewers better understand key moments as they happen.

How we built it

We designed the project as a modular system that processes match video input and generates real-time textual explanations aligned with game events. The frontend focuses on clarity and usability, while AI-driven components handle interpretation and explanation.

Challenges we ran into

Building a real-time experience within a short hackathon timeframe required careful prioritization. Ensuring explanations were both accurate and easy to understand while coordinating multiple components was an ongoing challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a working live match companion experience
  • Delivering clear, soccer-native explanations in real time
  • Designing a clean interface that complements live viewing

What we learned

We learned how to structure AI-assisted systems under time constraints, iterate quickly on user-facing explanations, and collaborate effectively while building different parts of the project in parallel.

What's next for Gaffer’s Chalkboard

Future improvements include expanding explanation styles, supporting additional sports, improving real-time performance, and adding new interactive features for viewers.
