Inspiration

This idea came up on the spot when one of our teammates went to the emergency room the last week. The goose pet simulator was inspired by the geese found in UB.

What it does

The main objective is to not let your goose die. You can feed your goose grass by clicking on the grass images found on your farm. With grass, you can sell your grass for currency which can be used to upgrade your farm. There are 5 stages and upgrading cost $20, $30, $40, and $50 as you move on. The goose dies over time in 20 seconds intervals. There will be an indication of the goose's health by the posture of the goose. The final and most important feature added is that the goose honks when feeding it grass.

How we built it

We used multiple languages and tools to build this website.

  • Python (for bottle)
  • Javascript (backend for all the button functions)
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Bottle (to be able to route files together)
  • AJAX
  • Replit IDE (collaboration)

Challenges we ran into

Since we are a group of CSE115 students with no prior coding experience, there were many things to learn. For the most part, we had to learn CSS, HTML, Bottle, and AJAX during the hackathon which wasted a lot of time that could have been used to polish the game better.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

First team project made here at UB. We had to stay up for the entire night to code this out so we are all mentally and physically tired and sick but at least we were able to present something that works.

What we learned

We definitely learned more about web development from the front and back ends. This hackathon taught me how to get insomnia, feel horrible and hate myself when coding at 3 am. Teamwork and communication skills were also improved over the duration of the hackathon.

What's next for GOOSE pet simulator

  • Killing the goose in other ways
  • more visual effects
  • support for more devices
  • publishing to the internet
