Inspiration

I'm a neurodivergent introvert with social anxiety. Nothing is more painful for me than getting trapped in conversations with talkative people and being held hostage in conversation with them. Most times I just end up standing there way longer than I should because I don't want to be rude and walk away. I also find it very mentally taxing to make small talk.

Fast forward to WWDC24 and the unveiling of the iOS 18. Instead of being a normal person and being super excited about Apple Intelligence, I was way more excited about the Controls Api. Why? Because now I could build an app that allows me to stealthily get out any conversation by getting a phone call on demand and initiate that call from my iPhone lock screen or action button. No more awkwardly waiting for the perfect time in conversation to say "Great, gotta go!" which rarely ever occurred anyways. Now I can press a button on my phone and say "Sorry, I've got to take this" and no one will think I'm a total Richard.

What it does

The app allows you end any conversation instantly by getting an incoming phone call on demand initiated from your lock screen or action button.

How we built it

Built it solo in my house! :)

Challenges we ran into

How to use the new controls api and get an api call to be run from it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Was super happy to get it done and approved in time by the iOS 18 public release and the Ship-A-Ton deadline!

What we learned

There's always a solution, you just have to take a break, clear your head and keep trying things!

What's next for G.T.F.O.

Hopefully have the app help as many people as possible like me out there! :)
