Inspiration

Inspired by the trending concept of "Hidden Gems in SG" and based on our personal experience. We wanted to venture out and create an intuitive app that allows for quick and easy discovery of the latest trends in Singapore, while hinging on the idea of "Supporting Small Businesses".

What it does

FYND is a discovery platform that helps Singaporeans explore and support hidden gems such as home-based businesses, local artists, and community events. Users can browse via an interactive map, search by category, bookmark favorites, and discover upcoming pop-ups or gigs, all in one place.

How we built it

We built FYND using a mobile-first approach with React Native for the frontend and Supabase for backend services, including authentication and database management. We integrated Google Maps API for real-time location-based discovery and implemented features like bookmarking, reviews, and category filters for a seamless user experience.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing an intuitive map interface that doesn’t overwhelm users.
  • Verifying local businesses to ensure authenticity without creating friction.
  • Balancing a clean UI with feature-rich functionality for both consumers and business owners.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built an interactive map with category-specific icons for easy navigation.
  • Created a dual experience for consumers (explore) and businesses (list services) in one app.
  • Designed a clean, mobile-first UI optimized for quick discovery and bookmarking.

What we learned

  • The importance of user-centric design for location-based apps.
  • How to integrate and optimize Google Maps API for performance on mobile.
  • Strategies for building trust through verification without making onboarding difficult.
  • How small businesses and local creators can benefit from centralized visibility.

What's next for FYND

  • Launch beta testing with local businesses and users.
  • Implement a personalized recommendation engine based on user preferences and location.
  • Introduce in-app event ticketing and RSVP features.
  • Expand verification options to make onboarding faster for small vendors.
  • Partner with local organizations to promote cultural and community events.
