Inspiration

As we move to the next stages of our lives and transition from college into the workforce, we need to start thinking about retirement funds and savings accounts. We decided to take these unfamiliar ideas and turn them into an app to help us visualize our futures.

What it does

This app gives a questionnaire to the user to determine what their goals are (retirement or savings), and how far into the future they would like to view their projections. It also takes into account other options, such as risk tolerance and lump sum/monthly deposits to predict what the compound amount will look like. It does this by pulling from real Index funds and their 1-5 year returns (depending on the options the user selects), and displaying compound deposits over time if the user were to invest in those specific accounts.

How we built it

We built this app through RShiny (with reactive options, separate tabs, and a coded model with a plot), with a visual concept created from Figma.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges creating the model for the compound sum amounts, given none of us have extensive knowledge about Index/Mutual Funds. This took a lot of research to overcome, especially given we researched each individual Index Fund we used for the app, and figured out a way to realistically implement them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our reactive app, and how we can use it to view our own personal future investments. We love how it's person-specific, and how the visuals fit beautifully into our product.

What we learned

We've learned what it means to invest in a savings/retirement fund, as well as what happens when you change your risk tolerance/deposits, and what the different Mutual Funds offer. We've learned a lot about finance in general, and how to implement ideas into an app.

What's next for FutureSense

We want to continue looking at how to combine our coded RShiny app and our design in Figma! We are also looking to implement this into our own lives as we look to the future after college!
