FutureNews

Inspiration

I was inspired by the powers of AI, but I had never seen anyone use it for predicting the future in a way that I came up with. This years prompt pushed me to harness AI to help time travel into the future, to benefit people who are uneducated in a topic understand more about how news could affect the world.

What it does

FutureNews allows for users to view currently trending news stories and "time travel" into the future, seeing how event play out and affect their own lives.

How we built it

I used Next.js, TypeScript, NewsAPI, and Google's Gemini to create this project.

Challenges we ran into

Combining the two APIs got very complex at times and I ran into plenty of issues. I also had to do a lot of optimization to get around being rate limited due to free API tiers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The combinations of both of the APIs provide lots of value to the news stories. The app could be very useful for those who are uneducated and want to see how certain news could affect their very own lives.

What we learned

I learned more about how most AI APIs work and I am excited to work with them more in the future. The blend between front end and API backend made for a great learning experience in Full Stack Web Development.

What's next for FutureNews

I would hope for people to find use for it so that I could maybe one day further build it into a better product. The whole idea of FutureNews is to improve media literacy for those who lack it, which could be impactful for those who are uneducated in some topics.
