Inspiration

Our inspiration for FutureHER comes from the pressing need to provide first-generation, low-income female students with accessible and reliable sex education. Seeing the gaps in support and resources for these students motivated us to create a solution that not only delivers crucial information but also builds a strong, supportive community. We are driven by the belief that empowering these students with knowledge and confidence will significantly improve their well-being and prospects.

What it does

Our website offers comprehensive, reliable sex education resources tailored for first-generation, low-income female students. We aim to enlighten and empower, creating a welcoming space where students feel supported and connected to a community that understands their needs. With a focus on inclusivity and accessibility, our platform ensures that every student has the knowledge and confidence to navigate their journey. We provide tools and guidance to help them make informed decisions, fostering a sense of belonging and paving the way for a brighter future.

How we built it

If we were to execute this, we would build the FutureHER website using a combination of coding languages and tools to create a user-friendly platform. The website will be created to ensure it met our specific needs and included features such as educational content, community forums, and a form for distributing period products. The sponsors that we collaborate with will help us produce accurate videos, articles, and games for these students. This approach allowed us to customize the website effectively and keep costs manageable.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into some inconveniences throughout the process of making this pitch. We struggled to pinpoint the ideal theme to support first-generation, low-income students and to develop ideas that effectively addressed their needs. Refining our approach was challenging, and we eventually had to restart because our initial ideas were not cohesive. This step back was crucial for aligning our solutions with the students’ needs and ensuring a more effective outcome.

We’re proud of developing a compelling pitch for FutureHER that clearly outlines how our innovative approach will provide essential sex education to first-generation, low-income students. Our pitch effectively highlights the positive impact and potential reach of the project, demonstrating its value and feasibility. We also consider our ideas to be very innovative and helpful. Despite initial challenges, we refined our ideas and crafted a cohesive presentation that resonated with our mission and goals.

What we learned

Throughout this process, we have learned a lot. Through developing FutureHER, we have learned the critical importance of addressing the educational and practical needs of first-generation, low-income female students. We discovered that these students face significant barriers, including limited access to reliable sex education, and financial constraints that impact their ability to obtain necessary period products. Our analysis highlighted the extensive reach of this issue, with millions of students potentially benefiting from targeted support. We also learned that a combined approach to providing accurate information and tangible resources can effectively address these challenges. Additionally, planning and budgeting have shown us the value of seeking sponsorships and fundraising to sustain our efforts. Overall, our work has underscored the need for a comprehensive support system that empowers these students and improves their overall well-being.

What's next for FutureHER

Next, we will finalize the development of the FutureHER website and secure sponsorships to cover shipping costs and create high-quality educational content. Our focus will then shift to launching a social media campaign for outreach, promotion, and fundraising, while efficiently managing product distribution to students. Finally, we will implement a system for monitoring and evaluating the impact of our services to ensure ongoing effectiveness and plan for future growth and expansion.

Problems –

FutureHER solves the problems of poor sex education and lack of access to period products for first-generation, low-income female students. Many of these students struggle with finding reliable information and affording necessary health items. By offering both accurate educational content and essential period products, FutureHER helps fill these gaps and supports students in making informed choices and managing their health.

Features –

FutureHER includes 3 main different features which include: HERcomUnity, EmpowerHER, and EducateHER. HERcomUnity is a supportive space designed to connect low-income girls. This feature allows them to meet others who share similar experiences, helping them feel less isolated. Additionally, the service provides access to mentors who can offer advice on menstrual health and emotional support. These groups also serve as a platform for sharing useful resources and information about healthcare services. EmpowerHER showcases small businesses we’ve partnered with that support low-income, first-generation female students. Through this, we provide free feminine hygiene products to ease financial stress. Students can apply for these essentials by filling out the form at the top of the page. We offer weekly panels with inspiring first-generation, low-income female college students who share their experiences and advice. Lastly, EducateHER provides engaging, reliable information and resources on sex education through videos, articles, and games.
