FutureFund Project Story

Inspiration

We built FutureFund after recognizing a problem that affects millions of young people globally: financial illiteracy.

Teenagers are expected to make important financial decisions about saving, investing, debt, taxes, and careers, yet schools rarely teach practical money management skills. Most financial apps also assume users already have money to manage, which makes them inaccessible or unhelpful for teenagers who are just beginning to learn about finance.

This inspired us to ask a simple question: What if young people could practice their financial future before facing real-world consequences?

That idea became FutureFund an AI-powered financial simulator where teenagers learn by making realistic financial decisions inside a safe virtual environment.

What we Built

FutureFund is an AI-powered financial education platform that simulates realistic financial life scenarios for teenagers. Instead of using real money, users are placed inside a personalized virtual financial journey where every decision affects their future.

The platform allows users to:

  • Experience realistic money-related situations
  • Learn budgeting and financial planning
  • Practice stock and cryptocurrency investing using virtual money
  • Receive AI-generated financial advice based on personal goals
  • Understand the long-term consequences of financial decisions

Example scenario:

You are 16 years old and just got your first part-time job earning $12/hour. You have $500 saved and want to buy a car in 2 years. What should your first financial decision be?

Each decision changes the simulation and teaches a practical financial lesson.

How we Built It we designed FutureFund as a modern web application with AI deeply integrated into the core experience.

Frontend we used:

  • React 18 for building the interface
  • TypeScript for type safety
  • Vite for fast development
  • Tailwind CSS for responsive styling

The interface follows a futuristic fintech-inspired design with:

  • Dark mode design
  • Neon cyan and magenta accents
  • Glassmorphism cards
  • Interactive dashboards
  • Real-time portfolio visualization

Backend we used Supabase for backend infrastructure. It manages:

  • User authentication
  • PostgreSQL database storage
  • Portfolio data
  • Simulation history
  • User progress tracking

AI Integration Artificial Intelligence is the core engine behind FutureFund.

we used AI to:

  • Generate personalized financial scenarios
  • Simulate the consequences of user decisions
  • Create dynamic learning experiences
  • Power an AI financial mentor that answers user questions in simple language

The AI adapts based on user behavior, making every financial journey unique.

External APIs To simulate real-world investing, we integrated market data APIs:

  • CoinGecko API for cryptocurrency prices
  • Finnhub API for stock market data This allows users to practice investing using live market conditions while keeping the environment completely risk-free.

Challenges we Faced One of the biggest challenges was designing a system that felt realistic enough to teach financial literacy while remaining simple enough for teenagers to understand. Financial systems are naturally complex, so we had to simplify concepts like investing, risk management, and portfolio diversification without removing their educational value.

Another challenge was AI prompt design. we needed the AI to generate financial scenarios that were:

  • Personalized
  • Educational
  • Realistic
  • Age-appropriate
  • Balanced between risk and reward

we spent significant time designing prompts that could create dynamic yet meaningful simulations.

we also had to think carefully about scope, since hackathons require building a polished MVP within limited time.

What we Learned Throughout this project i learned that AI is far more powerful when used as a decision engine rather than simply a chatbot.

we explored how AI can create adaptive educational experiences that respond differently depending on user choices.

we also learned valuable lessons about:

  • Prompt engineering
  • Financial modeling logic
  • API integration
  • Designing user-centered educational products
  • Building scalable full-stack applications under time pressure

Most importantly, we learned how technology can be used to solve real-world problems affecting young people directly.

Why This Project Matters

Financial literacy is one of the most important life skills, yet millions of students graduate without learning how money actually works.

FutureFund creates a safe space where young people can make mistakes, learn from them, and build financial confidence before entering adulthood.

Instead of learning through expensive real-life mistakes, users learn through simulation.

we believe AI should not only automate tasks it should empower the next generation with knowledge they were never taught.

Final Vision FutureFund is more than a hackathon project.

It represents a future where financial education becomes interactive, personalized, and accessible to every young person regardless of background.

By combining Artificial Intelligence, simulation, and gamified learning, we are helping students prepare for a world where understanding money and AI will be essential life skills.

FutureFund Learn your financial future before you live it.
