Inspiration
Many college students struggle to confidently choose a career path, often relying on generic advice or limited exposure to real-world opportunities. For computer science students especially, the number of possible paths, software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, AI, and more can feel overwhelming.
We were inspired to create Future You to remove the guesswork and provide a personalized, AI-driven experience that helps students better understand where they’re headed and how to get there.
What it does
Future You is an AI-powered career navigator that helps students discover and prepare for career paths aligned with their skills, interests, and experiences.
The platform:
- Builds a personalized student profile
- Uses a questionnaire to understand interests and strengths
- Analyzes resumes and provides feedback
- Recommends career paths with compatibility scores
- Compares resumes to job descriptions (“Job vs Resume” scoring)
- Provides mock interviews for real-world preparation
- Offers a “Future You” experience to show students potential career outcomes
- Allows users to explore real-time job opportunities
How we built it
We built Future You using a combination of AI and interactive web technologies:
- GPT for conversational guidance, recommendations, and feedback
- SitePal for voice and avatar-based interaction
- Computer Vision for enhanced profile insights
- A responsive UI that adapts based on user interaction and conversation
Challenges we ran into
- Defining a clear scope given the large vision of the platform
- Integrating multiple AI tools smoothly into one cohesive experience
- Structuring meaningful and accurate career recommendations
- Designing a system that feels personalized without overwhelming the user
- Time constraints during the hackathon while building multiple features
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a working MVP that connects career discovery with preparation tools
- Building an interactive AI experience rather than just a static recommendation system
- Designing features like “Future You” and resume-to-job scoring
- Combining multiple technologies into a single, unified platform
- Laying the foundation for a scalable solution that can expand beyond computer science students
What we learned
- The importance of narrowing scope for an MVP while still showing vision
- How to integrate multiple AI tools into a seamless user experience
- The value of personalization in educational and career tools
- How to quickly prototype and iterate under time constraints
- The importance of user-centered design when building AI systems
What's next for Future You
- Expand beyond computer science to support all college majors
- Improve accuracy of career recommendations using more data
- Fully integrate real-time job APIs for live opportunities
- Enhance the “Future You” simulation with deeper insights and projections
- Add stronger resume coaching and interview feedback
- Incorporate more accessibility and culturally relevant features
- Deploy the platform for real student use and gather feedback for iteration
