About the Project
The idea
Future You started with a simple frustration: I would make plans for myself, genuinely intend to follow through, and then somehow lose hours to distractions and scrolling.
Most reminders tell you what you need to do. I wondered:
What if the reminder came from you?
That became Future You a voice-reminder app where you record a promise or intention in your own voice, choose when you want to be reminded, and later hear those same words from your past self when it's time to check in.
The goal isn't to create another productivity app that pressures you with streaks. It's about creating a small moment of accountability between who you were when you made the promise and who you are when you hear it again.
How I built it
I built Future You as a solo project during the hackathon.
The core experience is:
- Record a promise to yourself.
- Schedule when Future You should check in.
- Receive a notification at that time.
- Hear yourself your recorded voice plays when you open the check-in.
- Check in on whether you followed through.
- Reflect on what got in the way and build a picture of your progress over time.
I built the web application, authentication, database, recording and playback flow, notifications, check-ins, progress experience, and responsive mobile UI as a solo developer.
Building with real users
After putting Future You live, I started sharing it with real people instead of relying only on my own testing.
So far, 34 users have signed up, with 14 users creating daily entries. I also received direct feedback from people who actually tried the product.
That feedback helped me improve the experience during the hackathon.
One tester pointed out that the Home and Progress pages felt too similar. Another initially expected the voice to play automatically after opening the check-in. That led me to improve the playback experience so the recorded voice now plays automatically.
I also received feature suggestions such as:
- Snoozing or rescheduling reminders
- A history of past voice notes and check-ins
- More options for when and how reminders play
But the feedback that stood out most was about the core idea.
One tester described hearing their own voice as:
"It feels less like a regular notification and more like a message I left for my future self."
Another person said that hearing their own voice instead of a generic reminder felt more personal and meaningful and caught their attention more.
That feedback was incredibly encouraging because it validated the feeling I originally wanted the product to create.
Challenges
Building it solo meant I had to handle both the product and the technical problems myself.
One of the biggest challenges was getting the notification flow right. I had to make sure the correct reminder reached the user and opened the correct check-in.
Testing with real users also exposed issues I hadn't noticed myself, including UI details, unclear interactions, and authentication/email problems. Instead of treating those as failures, I used them as opportunities to improve the product.
The experience taught me that something can work perfectly from a developer's perspective while still being confusing to someone using it for the first time.
What I learned
The biggest lesson was that building the feature is only half the job.
Once I put Future You in front of real people, I started receiving feedback I couldn't have predicted on my own. People pointed out small UI issues, confusing moments, and feature ideas I hadn't considered.
More importantly, I learned that early users can help you discover the emotional value of a product.
The original question was:
Does hearing your own voice actually feel different from a normal notification?
The feedback so far suggests that it does.
Future You is still an early version, but it has already become better through real people using it, finding problems, and telling me honestly what they experienced.
What's next
Future You is still evolving. Some of the ideas I want to explore next include reminder snoozing/rescheduling, a history of past voice notes and check-ins, richer progress insights, and more flexible reminder options.
For now, the goal is simple:
Make the reminder feel like it came from the person who knows you best you.
You make the promise. Future You remembers.
