Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea that most of us want to live sustainably but don’t know where to start, or how much our everyday habits really impact the planet. Future Scape bridges that gap by making our choices visible and meaningful.
What it does
Future Scape quizzes users on their daily habits, then uses AI to imagine the year 2050 if everyone lived the same way—painting a vivid picture of how our collective choices could shape the planet’s future.
How we built it
We built Future Scape with a Flask backend to handle user input and AI-powered predictions, and a JavaScript/HTML/CSS frontend for interactive quizzes and dynamic visualizations. The app uses API keys for OpenAI (AI storytelling) and Carbon Interface (emissions data), and is deployed via GitHub Pages for the frontend and Render for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
We faced significant challenges during development, many team members were burnt out and exhausted at times, leaving just two of us to push the project forward. On top of that, we had to juggle creating multiple presentations while keeping the app functional and polished. However, we pushed through, supporting and encouraging each other through teamwork. One teammate returned, and together we managed to complete the project, overcoming the challenges and finishing strong.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite almost giving up at times, we managed to push through. It was our first hackathon, and we weren’t even sure how to start or approach the project, but perseverance and teamwork carried us forward.
What we learned
One of us significantly expanded their knowledge of Flask API endpoints, while the other gained a much clearer understanding of crafting and delivering a successful pitch in presentations.
What's next for Future Scape
Next for Future Scape, we’re planning to add AI-generated images to help users vividly visualize what the world could look like in 2050, along with more detailed sustainability figures to give clearer insights into the impact of daily habits.
