Inspiration

Our goal was to create an informative and interactive monthly budget tracker that shows where the user is spending their money. Using these resources, users can better plan for their future and save smarter based on their previous spending habits. We wanted to make sure our final product was something we would use ourselves.

What it does

After filling out our Google Sheet, the user is provided with a list of where they spent their income and what percent of it is spent in each category. We also have a simple investment calculator that can help you see the value of compound interest along with a loan payment calculator.

How we built it

We used Velo by Wix and the Google Sheets API to gather the data. Each tab has its own collection of variables and formulas pulled from the sheet and outputted into the website.

Challenges we ran into

We had a very hard time working with the Google API because all the documentation online is outdated. It took a lot of trial and error and cutting down a lot of code and ultimately resulted in fairly bulky script. We slightly resolved this by adding a loading icon to know the script is functioning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were proud to not only have a completed and fleshed out website but one that looks professional and has multiple functions that work exactly as intended. Going from a 300 line print statement down to about 70 for 3 was a huge relief for us. As our first hackathon we are extremely pleased with our final product.

What we learned

We learned how to use Javascipt and Wix API integration and were able to test our problem solving and debugging skills on a larger scale project. We also learn just how complicated some simple tasks can be.

What's next for Future Freedom

Some things we would like to add in the future are preset, editable budget plans, integration with bank accounts and/or Plaid, and long-term investment goals. Along with the ability to log in as an individual user. We will be using the website for budgeting ourselves in the future as well.
