Inspiration

The initial inspiration was from the winter chalet scenes from glamorous movies of the mid 20th century. Women wore stylish outfits which had the primary function of keeping them warm. A standard item was a turtleneck, usually in a plain, basic colour. We have developed a sleeveless turtleneck shirt based on the item they wore.

What it does

The knit shirt is is made to be worn on top of an existing outfit, to add an element of texture or to keep you warm.

How I built it

We used a knitting machine to develop a sample and adjusted it twice before our final sample was made. We also have a hand sewn rough draft of the shape of the garment to provide a better visual of our idea.

Challenges I ran into

There were communication problems within the initial team and we resolved it by making the decision of separating. The first sample of the knit shirt needed improvement, the materials needed to be switched, we solved it by creating a second sample. The second sample needed changes due to a malfunction of the machine so a third sample was done and turned out well.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We were able to manage the communication situation. We were able to complete a project with only two first year members/students in a new environment. We were able to adapt.

What I learned

We learned to adapt to our new environment and we overcame several challenges by focusing on our goals.

What's next for Fusing Futures

To create more garments and concepts that allow to built a better future for everyone’s unique personalities and intersectionalities.
