inspiration
Retail companies often use discounts to boost sales, but excessive discounting can unintentionally reduce profitability. We were inspired to explore how different discount levels impact profit across product categories and regions, and how data visualization can support better pricing decisions.
What it does
This interactive Tableau dashboard analyzes the relationship between discount levels and profit using retail transaction data. It allows users to explore how profitability changes across discount ranges, identify high-risk discount patterns by category, and understand where over-discounting leads to financial losses.
How we built it
We built the dashboard using Tableau by cleaning and validating discount data, creating calculated fields such as discount bands and profit measures, and designing three core visualizations:
A scatter plot showing discount versus profit at the transaction level
A bar chart summarizing profit by discount range
A highlight table combining order count and profit impact by category and discount band The dashboard was published on Tableau Public to enable interactive exploration.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was ensuring accurate discount representation due to aggregation and formatting issues. We encountered discrepancies between raw discount values and Tableau’s default aggregations. This was resolved by validating the data against Excel, correcting data types, and using clean calculated fields and discount banding to avoid misleading results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of transforming a complex dataset into a simple, insightful dashboard that clearly communicates business risk. Combining order volume and profitability in a single highlight table allowed us to quickly identify over-discounted categories and deliver actionable insights in a visually intuitive way.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned the importance of data validation, proper aggregation, and thoughtful visualization design. We also gained hands-on experience in storytelling with data—focusing not just on charts, but on insights and business recommendations.
What's next for Impact of Discounting on Profit Across Categories & Regions
Next, we plan to extend the analysis by incorporating time-based trends, customer segments, and product-level margins. Adding predictive analysis could also help recommend optimal discount thresholds to maximize profit while maintaining competitive sales performance.
