Inspiration

After two years of University we found that we encountered many issues arising from a lack of basic knowledge in finance and budgeting. These skills had to be learnt from experience and we felt that every young adult should be given an education before they become financially independant and responsible.

What it does

FunTech is a mobile app that gives advice for budgeting and saving money as the user makes transactions.

How we built it

We built it around Thought Machine's Vault API to simulate transactions between a client and various buisnesses. This data is then sent over a python http server to the mobile app.

Challenges we ran into

Every step created a new challenge as we started with almost no experience in any of the languages that we were using. A critical issue that slowed down the progression of both sides of the project was communicating with the server using the REST API. This disrupted the flow of frontend and backend testing for a few hours, forcing us to code presumptively without much testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are all proud of the amount that we learnt over the 24 hours. We started out with no knowledge about FinTech so choosing it as a project topic was a bit daunting. Every task was new to us, from APIs and SSH keys to html servers and UI design. The determination and enthusiasm of the team in the project over the whole 24 hours was especially inspiring.

What we learned

The process helped us develop many new skills. As the project developed we learnt how to dynamically allocate roles and help eachother in a project where front end and back end are developed in parallel. Everybody on the team also gained valuable practice in learning new skills at speed.

What's next for FunTech

There were many features that we didn't manage to implement within the timeframe especially to do with the educational information available on the website. We believe that having more time to do some research into budgeting techniques would benefit both the app and our current accounts.
