🍄 Excited to finally share my latest AI animation project — FungAI, a 13-min episode created with Showrunner by Fable. It’s weird. It’s bold. It’s probably banned in some futuristic film school. Here’s how we made it, why it matters, and what else could possibly go wrong👇🧵
⸻
By the synopsis - what else could go wrong? “When tech mogul Sam Maltman is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he sets out to achieve AI singularity and transcend human limitations to leave his mark. His journey leads him to cross paths with a crazy biologist when a visionary experience will lead both to a groundbreaking discovery that will disrupt Silicon Valley forever.” Yes, that’s the plot 💀🧪🍄
⸻
This all started about a year ago when I got invited to the alpha test of Showrunner (by @fablesimulation). Naturally, I called my lovelly crazy friend Davi Moori and said: “Man, let’s write the most unhinged and surreal AI episode we can!” Hopefully he said yes, and that’s how we ended up here today. And then… we really went for it. (seriously)
⸻
Our main goal was to test and leverage Showrunner’s AI storytelling chops — But also to push how many AI tools we could mash into one watchable story. Think Frankenstein, but with prompts, platforms, and bad life decisions that include a lot of Red Bulls that you shoult not have drinked.
⸻
We didn’t want just a “cool-looking AI film, really.” We aimed for something you could actually watch without zoning out. Our main focus was to aim for a great “watchability”, something we think most AI films currently still lack. Because let’s be honest: a lot of AI films are pretty… but unwatchable. We focused on the story and the flow, not in being perfect.
⸻
So we focused on story + dialog. All the dialog in FungAI was generated with Showrunner, we also did some manual re-writting in some cases. Showrunner saved a lot of time. For everything else, we brought in the full Avengers lineup of AI tools: Midjourney, Runway, Luma, Minimax, ElevenLabs, Suno, Magnific, Udio… you name it.
⸻
The writing process? Absolute chaos. We wrote most of the original ideas ourselves (themes), than we used GPT to develop them further. The story itself did not came from GPT. We mixed plot twists, alternate endings, near-death bugs, and wild speculative ideas — all loosely (very loosely) structured using Dan Harmon’s Story Circle (yes, that Rick & Morty guy).
⸻
8/ Style-wise, is everything consistent? Absolutely not. Some style shifts are intentional. Some… we just embraced and fuck it. We let go of perfectionism and had fun telling a story. Flaws included.
⸻
Green screen saved us. We generated all dialog scenes with green backgrounds on Showrunner Discord, then replaced them with custom Midjourney shots. It gave us flexibility to create a more cinematic and high quality vibe. 🎬
⸻
We even customized characters & voices with Showrunner tools. Another handy tool from Showrunner was the character creator and voice clone. Soundtrack? All AI-generated via Suno + Udio.
⸻
No, we’re not selling anything. This was a creative experiment. Could we make a wild AI short that doesn’t suck? Could we push storytelling using Showrunner + other many AI tools combined? Turns out: kinda, yeah. This work is free to watch and does not have any commercial purpose.
