Inspiration

Finding affordable and enjoyable events is often difficult because information is scattered across social media, posters, ticketing websites, and local communities. People spend significant time searching for activities, comparing prices, checking availability, and finding trustworthy booking sources. Existing event platforms mainly focus on listings and ticket sales, while overlooking the emotional impact of experiences. We wanted to create a platform that helps users discover budget-friendly events while also promoting emotional well-being, community engagement, and meaningful social connections. This inspired us to build FunFare.

What it does

FunFare is a budget-friendly event discovery platform that helps users find nearby events based on their location, budget, interests, and mood. Users can browse events, view transparent pricing, check availability, access official booking websites, and navigate to event locations. The platform also allows users to log their mood before and after attending events, receive personalized recommendations, share experiences through community posts, maintain engagement streaks, and earn rewards through gamification features.

How we built it

We designed FunFare using a modern full-stack architecture. The frontend was built using React Native/Flutter to provide a seamless mobile experience. The backend uses Node.js and Express.js to manage APIs and business logic. Event and user data are stored using PostgreSQL/MongoDB, while Redis improves performance through caching. Google Maps integration powers location-based event discovery and navigation. Cloud storage manages event images and community uploads. Analytics and recommendation engines process user interactions and mood data to deliver personalized experiences.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was combining event discovery with emotional well-being tracking in a way that feels natural and useful. We had to design a simple mood-logging system that encourages participation without creating friction. Integrating location-based recommendations, community interactions, event filtering, analytics, and personalized suggestions into one unified platform also required careful planning. Ensuring secure and reliable redirection to official event booking websites was another important challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a platform that goes beyond traditional event discovery. FunFare combines affordability, accessibility, emotional well-being, and community engagement into a single solution. We successfully designed features such as mood-based event recommendations, post-event mood analysis, community sharing, streak tracking, gamified badges, and organizer analytics. Our platform demonstrates how technology can help people make better leisure choices while building stronger social connections.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained valuable experience in full-stack development, location-based services, recommendation systems, analytics, and community platform design. We learned the importance of designing products that address not only functional needs but also emotional and social well-being. The project also highlighted how personalization and community engagement can significantly improve user experiences and encourage meaningful participation.

What's next for FunFare-Budget Friendly Event Discovery App

We plan to enhance FunFare with an AI-powered event assistant that provides smarter recommendations and personalized planning support. Future features include group event planning, volunteer and community service event discovery, accessibility-focused filters, AR-based navigation, advanced mood prediction models, and loyalty reward systems. Our long-term vision is to make FunFare a comprehensive platform that helps people discover affordable experiences, improve their well-being, and build stronger local communities through meaningful real-world interactions.
